HC Deb 20 March 1984 vol 56 cc392-3W
Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry for each year since and including 1979 how many directors of companies were prosecuted for not filing accounts at Companies House.

Mr. Fletcher

Records are not maintained which would enable me to give the number of directors prosecuted for failure to deliver accounts. The following figures relate therefore to prosecutions for failure to deliver accounts and-or annual returns.

Prosecutions
1979 1,344
1980 1,058
1981 935
1982 920
1983 871

Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will list his powers to require registered companies to file their accounts annually at Companies House.

Mr. Fletcher

Failure to file is a criminal offence and I would normally institute criminal proceedings in cases of public complaint where normal reminder action had failed.

Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how many companies were in default by reason of their failure to file accounts at Companies House on 1 March in each year from 1979 to 1984.

Mr. Fletcher

The information is as follows:

Number
1979 266,000
1980 285,000
1981 331,000
1982 399,000
1983 406,000
1984 399,000

Note: The figure for 1979 is an estimate.
