HC Deb 13 March 1984 vol 56 cc99-100W
Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list in the Official Report (a) the number and (b) the percentage of unemployed youth in the special development areas at the latest date and the comparative figures for June 1979.

Mr. Alan Clark

[pursuant to his reply, 7 March 1984, c. 359]: The following table gives the numbers of registered unemployed aged under 18 years in July 1979 and the number of unemployed claimants in January 1984 for travel-to-work areas or jobcentre areas which comprise special development areas. The figures are not seasonally adjusted; in particular the figures for July 1979 are seasonally high due to new school leavers registering as unemployed and the January 1984 figures for Scotland will include Christmas school leavers. As indicated in my reply to the hon. Member on 6 March 1984, at column 539, to the related questions on Merseyside and Liverpool, percentage rates of unemployed by age are not available below national level owing to the absence of employment estimates by age. Information for October 1982 on both the registration and claimant bases included in my previous reply could be provided for special development areas only at disproportionate cost.
