Dr. Cunningham

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what information he has as to (a) the number and (b) the proportion of households (i) without a car and (ii) with two or more cars in each of the metropolitan district council areas at the latest available date.

Information is not available for district council areas later than the 1981 census. The relevant information can be found in tables 11 and 12 of census 1981, key statistics for local authorities Great Britain. Between censuses regional estimates of car ownership are made using data from sample household surveys. The latest estimates are published in "Transport Statistics Great Britain 1972–1982". Copies of these publications are available in the Library.
