HL Deb 17 January 1984 vol 446 cc1038-9WA
Lord Brockway

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What British observers, independent of both the British and El Salvadorean Governments, observed the election in El Salvador in 1982 and what their published conclusions were.

Lord Trefgarne

The observers sent by the Government to the election in El Salvador in March 1982 were both men of acknowledged integrity and entirely independent status. Other British citizens to observe the elections included the noble Lord, Lord Chitnis, and several journalists. Copies of the reports by Professor Bowen and Sir John Galsworthv and by Lord Chitnis are in the Library.
