HL Deb 17 January 1984 vol 446 c1038WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are aware that on 3rd May 1983, Lord Jenkins of Putney said that Lord Belstead had omitted from the list of facilities used by American Forces in this country the Oakhangar tracking station (col. 48); that on the same date Lord Belstead denied that Oakhangar should have been included (col. 62); and that in the 1980 Congressional Hearings General Clifford of the USAAF listed Oakhangar among seven satellite control facilities and that the American 1983–84 Defence Budget includes millions of dollars for modernisation at Oakhangar linked with Golden Dot nearby; and whether they will now invite Lord Belstead to withdraw his statement that there was "nothing in" Lord Jenkins' question about Oakhangar.

Lord Trefgarne

I have no intention of inviting my noble friend to withdraw a statement which correctly described the existing situation. We are aware of possible plans by the US Government to site additional facilities at Oakhangar, but these have not yet been formally proposed to Her Majesty's Government. If and when they are, they will be scrutinised in the usual fashion.
