HL Deb 17 January 1984 vol 446 c1039WA
Lord Underhill

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What action they propose to take to deal with the unsatisfactory situation whereby more than a million cars were untaxed in 1982, which have not been subject to prosecution; and whether the Department of Transport will ensure that there is sufficient staff to deal with any intended action.

Lord Lucas of Chilworth

With the help of the police, the Department of Transport expects to have achieved over 50 per cent. more prosecutions for evasion of Vehicle Excise Duty in 1983 than in 1982. Staff resources will be sufficient to ensure that the enforcement effort continues to improve, yet remains fully cost effective.
