HC Deb 27 February 1984 vol 55 cc21-2W
Mr. Maginnis

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many transfers of vehicle registration marks from donor vehicles in Northern Ireland to receiving vehicles elsewhere in the United Kingdom were processed in the year immediately preceding the suspension of this facility; and how many vehicles originally registered in Northern Ireland had their road fund licences renewed elsewhere in the United Kingdom during the same period.

Mrs. Chalker

As I stated in reply to a question by the hon. Member on 6 February—[Vol. 53, c.449]—there is at present no provision for the transfer of Northern Ireland registration marks from vehicles in Northern Ireland to those in other parts of the United Kingdom.

About 5,000 vehicles previously registered in Northern Ireland are relicensed and registered elsewhere in the United Kingdom each year. The owners of these vehicles have the option of retaining the Northern Ireland registration mark or having a replacement Great Britain mark. Most choose not to retain the Northern Ireland mark.
