HL Deb 03 December 1984 vol 457 cc1204-5WA
Lord Chelwood

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Why international driving permits issued in the United Kingdom are only valid for one year, and whether to save time, trouble and expense they will extend the period of validity to five years at least.

Lord Brabazon of Tara

It is a requirement of the international conventions under which these permits are issued that they shall be valid for up to one year from the date of issue. The Government are not aware that these long-standing arrangements have caused undue difficulties for motorists visiting those countries which do not yet recognise our driving licences.
