The salaries of Members of the European Parliament are determined and paid by member states at national rates. United Kingdom MEPs receive the same salary as a Member of Parliament in the House of Commons. Dual mandate Members receive one-third (£5,369) in addition to their MP's salary. The allowances payable to, and expenses which may be claimed by, Members of the European Parliament are determined and paid directly by the European Parliament itself. Members of the House of Commons Members of the Northern Ireland Assembly Salary £16,106 pa with effect from 1st January 1984. £9,656 pa with effect from 1st October 1984. Notes: Notes: (a) Abated for Ministers. (a) Salary and allowances prescribed by Order in Council under the Northern Ireland Constitution Act 1973. (b) London Supplement of £908 pa for Members representing London constituencies. Travel allowances 1. Reimbursement of all travel within UK on Parliamentary business. 1. Reimbursement of actual cost of fare for journeys by rail or bus, or by sea to Rathlin Island. 2. Reimbursement for 15 return journeys a year to Westminster for Member's spouse and each child under 18. 2. Reinbursement for journeys by motor vehicle other than bus or motor cycle, allowance as follows: 27p per mile for first 10,000 miles in each financial year, 16p per mile for further mileage. Mode of transport allowed: (i) by car, allowance as follows: engine capacity less than 1300 cc 18p per mile for first 20,000 miles in each financial year, 11.3p per mile for further mileage; engine capacity more than 1300 cc but less than 2300 cc 25.9p per mile for first 20,000 miles, 14.7p per mile for further mileage; engine capacity more than 2300 cc 39p per mile for first 20,000 miles, 19.5p per mile for further mileage. 3. Reimbursement for journeys by motor cycle, allowance as follows: engine capacity less than 150 cc 6.4p per mile; engine capacity more than 150 cc but less than 250 cc 8.6p per mile; engine capacity more than 250 cc 12.7p per mile. (ii) by first class rail. (iii) by air. (iv) by sea as necessary. Subsistence allowances Allowed for: No provision. (a) Provincial Member with London home staying overnight to carry out Parliamentary duties in constituency. (b) Provincial Member with constituency home staying overnight in London. (c) Member with home neither in London nor in constituency, either for nights in London or for nights in the constituency (ie not for both). Allowance: Maximum £6,696 pa Secretarial and Research allowances Allowed for general office expenses, secretarial and research assistance necessarily and exclusively incurred on Parliamentary duties. An allowance is paid to each Member of the Assembly to defray expenses incurred on secretarial assistance in carrying out official duties. Allowance: Maximum £12,437 pa. Allowance: Maximum £7,462 pa. Pro rata supplement payable in the event of sickness of secretary or research assistant lasting more than four weeks. Additional allowance of £1,243 to be paid into an approved pension scheme to provide a pension for Member's employees. Provision for 9 return journeys a year between Westminster and constituency for Member's staff engaged on secretarial and/or research duties.
