§ Sir Keith JosephBetween 1 July 1983 and 1 July 1984 the number of staff in the Department increased by 41. This reflects an increase in its agreed manpower ceilings from 2,402 at 1 April 1984 to 2,472 at 1 April 1985, mainly to allow for an expansion of Her Majesty's Inspectorate which has been authorised to support the Government's policies to raise standards in education.
