§ Mr. McTaggartasked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will provide a breakdown by number and percentage of those who have been unemployed for one year or over per Standard Industrial Classification in (a) Glasgow and (b) Scotland.
§ Mr. Alexander FletcherThe analysis of the unemployment register by Standard Industrial Classification was last undertaken in May 1982 and has since been discontinued. This analysis and the analysis by duration of unemployment were, moreover, undertaken in different months. It is not possible therefore to compare the two analyses directly.
On 14 October 1982, the latest date available, 41,592 people were registered as unemployed for over 52 weeks in the Glasgow travel-to-work area, representing 41.1 per cent. of total unemployment in the area. The comparable figures for Scotland as a whole were 127,837 and 36.2 per cent. respectively.
The following table gives an analysis of total unemployment by Standard Industrial Classification at 13 May 1982.
