HC Deb 06 December 1982 vol 33 cc419-20W
Mr. McTaggart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the percentage unemployment rate in the construction industry in Glasgow; and how many craftsmen in each of the respective trades are unemployed.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

On 13 May 1982, the last date for which information is available, the number of people registered as unemployed in the Glasgow travel-to-work area who had last worked in the construction industry represented 31 per cent. of the labour force in the industry locally. The percentage is based on the 1978 census of employment and is subject to revision when later census results become available.

The occupational analysis of unemployed workers whose last employment was in the construction industry has been discontinued. It was last completed in October 1981 when the numbers of unemployed workers registered for employment in each of the building trades listed were as shown in the table below.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

[pursuant to his reply, 29 November 1982, c. 9]: The industrial analysis of unemployed workers was last undertaken in May 1982 and has since been discontinued. The table following gives the numbers of persons registered as unemployed at that date at employment and careers offices in East Lothian, Edinburgh, and the Borders who had last been employed in the construction industry:

Numbers
East Lothian (comprising Haddington and Musselburgh employment office areas) 634
Edinburgh (comprising the Edinburgh, Leith and Portobello employment office areas) 3,080
Borders region 410
