HC Deb 30 October 1981 vol 10 c487W

Sir Frederick Burden asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what special financial provisions are made for the widows and children of men in bomb disposal units killed whilst carrying out their extremely dangerous duties.

Mr. Whitelaw:

Bomb disposal personnel employed by the Metropolitan Police are civilian employees and the terms and conditions for the payment of awards in the event of injury or death on duty are the same as these which apply to civil servants. These include a continuing widow's allowance based on a minimum income guarantee of at least 45 per cent. of the husband's pensionable pay with the addition of 10 per cent. for each eligible child. Dependants are also eligible to make a claim for an exgratia payment under the criminal injuries compensation scheme.
