Mr. Charles Irving asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the current excess of prison population over certified normal prison accommodation.

Mr. Mayhew:

On 16 October, the total number of inmates of prison department establishments in England and Wales was about 43,900, an excess of 4,400 over the certified normal accommodation of about 39,500.
