HC Deb 21 October 1981 vol 10 cc133-4W

Mrs. Renéee Short asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for Wolverhampton, North-East on 6 May, if he will make a further statement following his study of the incidence of racial attacks being conducted in selected police areas.

Mr. Whitelaw:

The work of my officials is now well advanced. A survey of reported incidents has been carried out in the 13 selected police areas, and my officials have visited these areas to discuss the problem of racial attacks with those directly concerned. The study has found that racially motivated attacks have occurred on a significant scale, but that they do not appear generally to be based on an orchestrated campaign by Right-wing extremist organisations. I shall report the findings to the House in greater detail as soon as possible.
