asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many homes on Merseyside are (a) without inside sanitation and (b) unfit to live in; and how these figures compare with the national average.

Estimates of the number of households without use of an inside WC for each of the Merseyside metropolitan districts and for England as a whole are published in the Report of the National Dwelling and Housing Survey: phases II and III, a copy of which is in the Library. Estimates of the number of unfit dwellings in Merseyside are not available in my Department.
