HC Deb 04 December 1980 vol 995 c142W
Mr. Marlow

asked the Secretary of State for Trade whether he will take immediate steps to ensure that petrol pumps are required to mark sales in gallons.

Mrs. Sally Oppenheim

Although it has been perfectly legal to sell petrol by the litre since 1897, the Price Marking (Petrol) Order 1980 will make it obligatory in the case of metric sales for garages to indicate both the price per litre and the equivalent price per gallon from 1 January 1981. I have no timetable in mind for removing the requirement to show the gallon price.
