Community Service Orders

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has any plans to extend the use and scope of community service orders.

Mr. Brittan

The use of community service, which is now available throughout England and Wales, is a matter for the courts. We hope to see it increasingly used, in appropriate cases, instead of short custodial sentences.

We have no plans at present to extend the scope of community service.
