HC Deb 18 June 1979 vol 968 cc374-5W
Mr. Morgan

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is satisfied with the quality of both television and radio reception in many parts of Old Colwyn, Clwyd; and what steps he proposes to take to improve the situation.

Mr. Brittan

The provision of their broadcasting services is primarily the responsibility of the respective broadcasting authorities. The BBC tells me that for a number of people in the Colwyn Bay area UHF television reception may be difficult and that improvement would be dependent on resolving the complex problem of identifying frequency channels which could be used in that area.

With regard to radio the BBC tells me that reception of its network radio services including Radio Cymru on VHF, its Radio 4 (United Kingdom) service on the long wage and Radio Wales on the medium wave should all be satisfactory. The BBC is aware that the quality of reception of Radios 1, 2 and 3 on medium wave is unsatisfactory and is investigating the practicability of improving the medium wave coverage of those services.
