Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the number of porters employed at the Central Middlesex Hospital; and what is the weekly rate of pay of the head porter and the rate for other grades in the portering service.

Mr. Moyle

There are 53 porters employed at the Central Middlesex Hospital and they are paid according to the grading structure and rates of pay negotiated by the Ancillary Staffs Whitley Council and as laid down in the handbook. The basic weekly rates of pay are:

  • Head porter £51.28*
  • Deputy head porter £47.00*
  • Chargehand porter grade 5 £44.72*
  • Porter grade 4 £44.08*
  • Porter grade 3 £43.48*

*All porters working at the Central Middlesex receive an additional £6.68 per week London weighting allowance.

Weekly earnings can be substantially more because of allowances, shift work, night work, weekend working, overtime, bonus and other allowances.
