§ Mr. Wallasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement about the number of British citizens who are refugees in the sovereign base areas or elsewhere in Cyprus and the amount of aid that they are receiving from Her Majesty's Government or from United Nations sources.
§ Mr. JuddThere are about 3,000 displaced persons living in the sovereign base areas. There are now about 150 at Anzio 669W camp, most of whom have dual British and Cypriot nationality. It is not known how many claim British or dual nationality at the other camps, which are administered by the Cyprus Government. The residents of Anzio camp are accommodated free of charge; in addition some medical assistance is given to displaced persons at the medical reception station at Dhekelia.
In the Republic of Cyprus it is estimated that there may be about 4,000 displaced persons holding British passports. Of these, about 3,000 are of Greek Cypriot origin and about 1,000 of Turkish Cypriot origin, and the vast majority in both categories have dual nationality—that is, Cypriot and British. Some of them are eligible to receive refugee allowances or assistance, part of which comes from United Nations funds. As far as is known, no displaced United Kingdom national for whom the British Government have consular responsibility is living in a refugee camp or receiving refugee assistance from Cyprus Government or United Nations sources. Three British passport holders of Maltese origin, the last of a large number of British passport holders evacuated by the British Government in 1941 from Greece and Turkey, are receiving assistance from the British Government. Two Britsh nationals resident in their homes in the Karpass area in northern Cyprus receive some food supplies from the United Nations.
In addition, there are some 90–100 United Kingdom nationals who have left their homes in northern Cyprus together with about 50 who have taken refuge from the Lebanon, none of whom receives aid from United Nations or British Government sources.
