HC Deb 22 November 1978 vol 958 cc667-8W
Mr. Wall

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs

Report, 17th July, c. 84–5; and, if not, when he anticipates being able to provide this information.

Mr. Guy Barnett

The following table gives the latest provisional figures for the information requested. Final figures will not be available until all local authorities have submitted their statements of account.

what protests he has received about the murder of Victor Sedletsky in the USSR and; what action he is taking to bring these protests to the notice of the Government of the USSR, within the context of the Helsinki Final Act.

Mr. Luard

My right hon. Friend has received one communication from a religious group and 10 letters from hon. Members about this case. My right hon. Friend has no independent means of verifying the shocking facts related to him and so is not in a position to take a stand vis-à-vis the Soviet Government on this particular case.

The Soviet Government have been left in no doubt about the deep concern felt in this country about the implementation of the provisions of the final act of Helsinki as regards religious freedoms.
