HL Deb 23 May 1977 vol 383 cc1157-8WA
Lord HYLTON

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the maximum number of nuclear weapons stored in the United Kingdom at any one time; how many persons have access to them; and how many such persons have been dismissed or relieved of their duties because of alcoholism, drug-abuse, mental illness or serious indiscipline, in each of the last three years.

Lord WINTERBOTTOM

It would not be in the public interest to give specific details about the numbers or locations of, or security arrangements for, nuclear weapons. As my right honourable friend the Secretary of State for Defence recently said in another place, the utmost effort is put into the very stringent safety and security arrangements which apply to nuclear weapons. These are subject to independent assessment, and we are confident that they are entirely satisfactory.
