HL Deb 23 May 1977 vol 383 c1158WA
Lord HYLTON

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many tons of radio-active waste arise each year as by-products of the making of nuclear weapons in Britain, what is its degree of radio-activity and how is it disposed of.

Lord WINTERBOTTOM

Security considerations preclude the release of details of the radio-active wastes which arise from defence nuclear programmes. Limits on the quantities of wastes discharges to the environment are agreed with the relevant authorising departments, i.e. Department of the Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Scottish Office and Welsh Office, who are satisfied that the MOD disposal arrangements meet their health and safety requirements.
