Mrs. Bain

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the total number of local authority houses allocated for the specific use of prison officers at each of Her Majesty's prisons in Scotland how many of each allocation is currently vacant and how far this is attributable to married staff living out with official quarters.

12 local authority houses are allocated for the specific use of prison officers. 10 are at Barlinnie Prison, Glasgow, and two at Perth Prison. None of these are vacant at present.

Mrs. Bain

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he has any evidence that rent allowances to married staff attached to her Majesty's prisons are being cut back if they refuse to live outwith official quarters.

Mr. Harry Ewing

Eight officers of the Scotish Prison Service who are entitled to occupy official quarters live outwith quarters and do not receive rent allowance, as official quarters are available for all of them.
