HC Deb 08 December 1977 vol 940 cc805-6W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how much of the £100 million made available in the Chancellor of the Exchequer's statement on 15th July for the construction industry has been spent on projects (a) in the North-West and (b) on Merseyside; and how many construction workers have been thereby given employment.

Mr. Shore

I regret that information is not available in the form requested. However, the provisional allocation for projects in the North-West and on Merseyside of the housing and new towns part of the £100 million to assist construction announced by my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer on 15th July is as follows:

£ million
Total allocated to housing and new towns in England 56.6
Provisionally allocated to the North-west for housing and new towns 13.2
Provisionally allocated to Merseyside for housing and new towns 3.1

It is clear that this will be a positive help to the employment problem in the construction industry of the region, but it is not possible to estimate how many additional construction workers will be given employment.
