asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what powers he has to empower British Rail to sell railway property that is no longer required for operational use by British Rail.

Section 14 of the Transport Act 1962 empowers the British Railways Board to dispose of property it no longer needs for its business. My right hon. Friend's consent is not required.
