asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the estimated number of redundancies of workers in the building and construction industry on Merseyside in house building and other public works, following the recently announced cuts in public expenditure.

The extent to which Merseyside might be affected by the announcement on public expenditure made by my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer on 22nd July is not yet known.
