HC Deb 03 August 1976 vol 916 cc741-2W
Mr. Craigen

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if his Department has any estimate of the number of households with three-gallon water cisterns; and if he has calculated the possible saving in daily water consumption by effecting a reduction in the capacity by the equivalent of one gallon.

Mr. Denis Howell

No estimate is available of the number of three-gallon WC flushing cisterns in England and Wales. The estimated number of households with cisterns of this size in Scotland is 1.1 million. In the circumstances I have no meaningful figure for the amount of water that could be saved by an overall reduction in capacity of one gallon.
