Mr. Dudley Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will give the latest available estimates of the numbers employed in public passenger transport by road, private coach operation, taxi services, car hire, road haulage contracting, own account road haulage, motor vehicle manufacture, motorcycle manufacture, bicycle manufacture, motor vehicle distribution and repair, petrol and Dery distribution and sales, tyre manufacture and sales, road construction and maintenance and the operation of public and private car parks.

My Department's employment estimates are analysed by minimum list headings of the Standard Industrial Classification which identify some but not all of the categories. The following table shows statistics for the nearest appropriate headings. The figures are from the June 1975 annual census of employment. Monthly or quarterly estimates for more recent dates are being revised in the light of the census of employment figures and will be published in the Department of Employment Gazette shortly.
