HC Deb 10 November 1975 vol 899 cc412-3W
Mr. Frank R. White

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many driving licences have been issued at the latest convenient date.

Mr. Carmichael

In the twelve months ending 30th September 1975 and in relation to Great Britain, 10,083,791—including 2,845,166 provisional licences valid for one year and 6,356,828 full licences valid for three years: the balance consists of duplicate, exchange and replacement licences. The DVLC now hold the records of 17 million drivers out of an estimated total of 20 million.

Mr. Frank R. White

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the estimated lost revenue caused by the use of vehicles without a driver's licence.

Mr. Carmichael

The number oft people driving vehicles without a driving licence is not known. But the fee for a driving licence is designed to cover the cost of producing it—not as a means of producing revenue.
