§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) whether, in view of the concern felt in the current conduct of the Special Branch and the concern felt by the public in the handling by the Special Branch of matters connected with the carrying out by Members of Parliament of their parliamentary duties, he will establish an investigation into this matter;
(2) whether, in view of the concern felt in the current conduct of the Special Branch and the concern felt by the public in the handling by the Special Branch of matters connected with the legitimate activities of trade unionists engaged in trade disputes, he will establish an investigation into this matter;
(3) whether, in view of the concern felt in the current conduct of the Special Branch and the concern felt by the public in the handling by the Special Branch of matters connected with matters unconnected with the Irish problem, he will establish an investigation into this matter, and advise on how complainants may apply to give evidence, both oral and in writing.
§ Mr. Roy JenkinsI have received some representations about the alleged activities of Special Branch officers. I am considering these representations but I have no intention at present of setting up an inquiry.
