HC Deb 18 June 1974 vol 875 cc114-5W
Mr. Wyn Roberts

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what have been the gross profits of private enterprise in the United Kingdom in the last 10 years; what have been the gross profits of nationalised industries in the same period, after deducting all forms of direct Government assistance by way of subsidies and debts written off in each case; and what have been the amounts of Government assistance to each sector.

Dr. Gilbert

The information requested is given in the table below. Subsidies are defined as current grants, as in the national income accounts, and therefore exclude the writing off of accumulated debt. Figures for such capital transfers to public corporations are shown separately in the final column in the table. Information is not readily available as to any comparable transactions which may have occurred between the central Government and private industry.

(M1 and M3) in the period January to June 1974.

Mr. Dell

The narrow and broad definitions of the (M1 and M3) grew by 1.9 per cent. and 4.5 per cent. respectively in the period between mid-December 1973 and mid-May 1974 allowing for seasonal adjustment. The figures for banking June are not yet available.
