HC Deb 31 July 1974 vol 878 c259W
Mr. Hurd

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a statement on the recent discoveries regarding eruric acid and on EEC plans to develop increased production of protein in member countries.

Mr. Bishop

Eruric acid is not a significant constituent of human food in the United Kingdom but recent reports are being studied by our medical advisers, in conjunction with their advisory committees. The Commission's ideas for developing production of protein for animal feeding in member countries are contained in the Commission's Communication to the Council dated 31st October 1973 on the Improvement of the Common Agricultural Policy to which is attached the Commission's Report on the Community's Protein Supplies. (COM (73) 1859 final.) The Council agreed to introduce new schemes for dehydrated fodder, field bean seeds for sowing and soya beans.
