HC Deb 31 July 1974 vol 878 cc258-9W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what plans he has to bring about long-term stability to the meat production industry.

Mr. Peart

Meat production is an important element in the discussions now taking place with the interests concerned on the long term future of the agricultural industry, in which satisfactory progress is being made. In my statement of 19th June I gave my views on the ways in which the Community's regimes particularly for beef should be improved to provide greater stability.

Mr. Michael McNair-Wilson asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what plans he has for assisting livestock farmers to overcome the high costs of meat production.

Mr. Bishop

We have introduced a number of measures to assist livestock producers, including the special pig subsidy and the increased calf subsidy. The beef premium arrangements being introduced next month are a further major measure of assistance.
