HC Deb 31 July 1974 vol 878 c274W
Mr. Hooson

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection what is the estimate of the total cost for a full year of the subsidies on foods agreed so far; and how it is proposed to finance them.

Mr. Maclennan

The estimated cost in a full year of the subsidies on milk, butter, bread, cheese and tea is £432 million. The cost of the subsidy programme will be borne on the Vote of my Department.

Mr. Edward Lyons

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection what further foods it is intended to subsidise in addition to those in respect of which announcements have already been made; and if she will make a statement.

Mr. Channon

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection what proposals she has for further increases in the food subsidies; and if she will announce these to the House.

Mr. Maclennan

I would refer to my right hon. Friend's reply today to my hon. Friend the Member for Rother Valley (Mr. Hardy) announcing the introduction of a subsidy on tea. She is considering the scope for further subsidies and will announce any proposals as soon as possible.
