§ Mr. Loveridgeasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether in the course of his examination of the safety of school roofs, he has examined any school roofs in the London Borough of Havering.
§ Mr. ArmstrongNo. This is a matter for local education authorities, with whom the responsibility for the maintenance and safety of their school buildings rests. My right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Education and Science and for the Environment have jointly issued letters of warning and advice to all authorities following the collapse of the roof of the swimming pool of a school in Stepney earlier this year. Officers are keeping in touch with authorities and I understand that one primary school in Havering has been temporarily closed for investigation and that the children are being accommodated at nearby schools.
