HC Deb 04 December 1974 vol 882 c499W
Mrs. Winifred Ewing

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what are the terms of reference of a research feasibility study of environmental rehabilitation and industrial redevelopment known as the Cambuslang project; whether the project is being sponsored by the EEC; and whether it is in progress, or, if not, when it is due to start.

Mr. William Ross

I have been asked to reply.

The technical working party set up by the previous Government to carry out this study has been asked to examine the possibilities for environmental recovery and industrial redevelopment in the Cambuslang area where, in the event of a closure of part of the British Steel Corporation's existing activities, a major area of land would be added to that available for redevelopment; to prepare detailed plans; and to make recommendations on the phasing and method of development having particular regard to the need to provide alternative employment opportunities before redundancies begin to take effect.

Up to £45,000 is being provided from the funds of the European Coal and Steel Community towards the cost of engaging consultants for the study. The remainder of the costs is being borne by the Government.

The study began in November 1973.
