HC Deb 09 November 1970 vol 806 cc2-3W
43. Mr. Hugh Jenkins

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what goods are allowed duty-free entry to this country from South Africa; and if he will seek to eliminate discrimination against imports from developing countries as compared with those from South Africa.

Mr. Anthony Grant

Virtually all goods from South Africa are accorded duty-free entry into this country. The scheme for generalised preferences recently agreed at U.N.C.T.A.D. should provide for duty-free entry for most goods from developing countries.

Mr. Judd

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether he will make a statement on the Government's policy towards the continuance of Commonwealth trade preference to the Republic of South Africa.

Mr. Anthony Grant

The preferential arrangements with South Africa assist our trade in both directions. Our present policy is to maintain them subject to any changes that may be necessary if our negotiations with the European Economic Community are successful.
