asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what progress has been made in the last five months in obtaining from the Japanese Government a larger quota for the import into Japan of British footwear.

As I informed the right hon. Member on 22nd July, we are pressing for improved access for British footwear in our current trade negotiations with Japan. These negotiations are still in progress.—[Vol. 804, c. 529.]
