HC Deb 15 May 1970 vol 801 cc403-4W
Dr. Gray

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if he will introduce legislation to change the existing rate values of property so that an increase in rates will not follow the installation of a fire defence system; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Greenwood:

There are many features which may affect the rental value of property by making it safer or in other ways more valuable to the occupier. One cannot readily justify singling out one feature, even such an important one as a fire defence system, for exceptional rate relief. It is unlikely that the prospect of any small increase in rateable value which might arise would deter people from installing apparatus to protect their property.
