HC Deb 18 March 1970 vol 798 c135W
Mr. William Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what were the average earnings of a newly recruited policeman in 1955, 1960, 1965 and 1970; and how the average annual rate of increase compares with that of industrial workers.

Mr. Ross

Figures of the average earnings of police officers are not readily available. Basic starting pay for an entrant at age 19 at 1st January, 1970—taking into account the recent interim award—will have increased by 102 per cent. over the 1955 figure. Over the same period the index of basic weekly wage rates for all manual workers increased by 91 per cent.
