asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many abortions have been carried out in National Health Service hospitals since the commencement of the operation of the recent Act; and what were the figures in a comparable period of time prior to the Act.

The information is not available for the period before 27th April, 1968, the date on which the Abortion Act, 1967, came into operation. In the period 27th April, 1968, to 31st December, 1969, 4,896 abortions were carried out in National Health Service hospitals in Scotland.
