HC Deb 27 April 1970 vol 800 cc229-30W
Mr. Ashton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will list the schools in Nottinghamshire which will benefit from his recent decision regarding greater expenditure on primary schools; what is the amount of money involved; and whether the order of priority is the same as the one recommended to him by Nottinghamshire County Council.

Miss Bacon:

My right hon. Friend has approved the following projects for starting in 1971–72 as part of the programme for the improvement and replacement of old schools:

£
Worksop, Valley Road Junior School 80,000
Sutton in Ashfield, Dalesforth Road Primary School 73,000
Worksop, Manton Road Infants' School 80,000

The projects were first, second and fourth in order of priority in the list submitted to my right hon. Friend by the Nottinghamshire local education authority. We omitted the third project, a further instalment of a secondary school at Arnold estimated to cost £133,000, which would indirectly make possible the closure of Calverton Road Infants School, because, although in old buildings, it does not serve a socially deprived area. The project will be considered again for a subsequent programme.
