HC Deb 27 April 1970 vol 800 c229W
Mr. Fortescue

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what use his Department makes of the National Giro for regular payments of salaries and pensions, and for other purposes; and, in view of the under-used capacity of the Giro, whether he will consider using it more.

Mr. Edward Short:

The National Giro is used for the payment of nearly all weekly wages in my Department and for the payment of monthly salaries to those staff who have asked for it. The Department does not itself make any pension payments. The National Giro is used for other transactions where it is the most economical method, and the feasibility of its further use is under consideration in the Department.
