§ Mr. Hugh Jenkinsasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is Her Majesty's Government's policy regarding the making of representations to foreign governments on behalf of political prisoners; and on what grounds this policy differs from that followed towards the Greek Government.
§ Mr. M. StewartIt is our practice to make representations to foreign Governments which hold British subjects in custody without trial, but we do not have the same standing to make representations about their treatment of their own nationals. Our practice in relation to the Greek Government conforms with this position, and we have successfully made representations on behalf of British subjects held in Greece.
As regards the treatment by the Greek Government of their own nationals, they 14W are well aware of our concern about political prisoners in Greece.
