HC Deb 12 February 1969 vol 777 cc308-9W
64. Sir A. V. Harvey

asked the President of the Board of Trade, what steps are being taken to impose anti-dumping on imports of cheddar-type cheese.

Mrs. Gwyneth Dunwoody

The Board of Trade is investigating an application by the British producers for imposition of anti-dumping or countervailing duties on imports of certain types of cheese and cheese products from certain countries and has accepted that aprima facie case has been made out. If there is evidence of a significant increase in dumped or subsidised imports or market prices seem likely to collapse, the Board will impose a provisional charge to duty immediately. The Governments of the exporting countries concerned have been informed accordingly, and discussions are proceeding. Board of Trade accountants are investigating the effect of the dumped and subsidised imports on the finances of the United Kingdom cheese producers to enable the Board to decide whether material injury is being caused or threatened. If the Board so decides, it will proceed forthwith to consider, in consultation with the other Departments concerned, whether the imposition of anti-dumping or countervailing duties would be in the national interest.
