§ Mr. Carter-Jonesasked the Minister of Transport (1) if he will ensure that contractors building motorways and other major roads are compelled to reduce to an absolute minimum the inconvenience 17W and suffering caused to residents by heavy vehicles causing damage and distress; and if he will make a statement;
(2) what action he takes to prevent motorway contractors from damaging roads and causing inconvenience to pedestrians by mud, loose stones and water on roads approaching new motorways; and if he will make a statement;
(3) what action is taken to protect the occupants of houses in privately-owned public roads from mud, road damage, house damage and inconvenience caused by motorway and trunk road contractors' vehicles using such roads; and if he will make a statement;
(4) what action is taken to protect the occupants of houses in public roads from mud, road damage, house damage and inconvenience caused by motorway and trunk road contractors' vehicles using such roads; and if he will make a statement.
Mr. Bob BrownAny contractor executing roadworks on our behalf is required by the terms of his contract
(i) to conform with all Acts of Parliament, Regulations, and Byelaws of any local or other statutory authority which may be applicable;(ii) not to interfere unnecessarily or improperly with the public convenience or the access to use and occupaton of public or private roads or to or of properties; and(iii) to keep existing highways, including private roads affected by the works, free from mud and all things deposited thereon by vehicles, labour or plant which might either constitute a nuisance or interfere with the public use of such highways or private roads.
