asked the Minister of Transport if he will give a general direction to the Railways Board to ensure that the computers and staff employed in payroll duties and processing of information in Scotland are retained in Scotland and that this work is not removed to Crewe or elsewhere south of the border; and if he will make a statement.

No. Such a general direction would not be appropriate. On the particular issue I would refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave to the hon. Member for Glasgow, Pollok (Mr. Wright) on 24th November. The Railways Board has assured my right hon. Friend that it will continue to locate its offices as far as possible in accord with the objectives of the Government's regional policies.—[Vol. 792, c. 39.]
