HC Deb 03 August 1966 vol 733 cc101-2W
49. Mr. Hooson

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many service families are accommodated in married quarters at the present time; what new married quarters would have to be built in this country to accommodate the United Kingdom forces at present in Germany; and what the total cost of this would be.

Mr. Ennals

Some 130,000 Service families are accommodated in married quarters and official hirings at home and abroad.

The second part of this question relates to a situation which is hypothetical.

72. Mr. Bagier

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will amend Queen's Regulations in order to provide for applications for married quarters to be accepted from other ranks at the minimum age of 19 years, and officers at the age of 21 years; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. J. P. W. Mallalieu

No. Though the supply of married quarters has increased so much in the past few years that we have been able to abandon the more onerous rules, we cannot yet abandon them all.
